Peres and Bond

Janaki and I went to see Shimone Peres speak at Cornell today. Getting the tickets and getting a decent seat pretty much ate up our day but we figured that it wasn’t every day that we got to see a former Prime Minister, now Vice Prime Minister of Israel, the last remaining founder of Israel still participating in civic government speak.

So off we went.

Mental note, never go see politicians speak. Always go see retired politicians speak. Working politicians who are still in office can’t ever really say anything.

And Peres was good at not saying anything. He basically filled our ears with the same simplistic crap that my Hebrew school teachers fed me when I was twelve. I ate it then but its been a few decades.

I have nothing against Zionism or folks who are pro-Israel but please, oh please don’t simplify the situation. Don’t make it sound like suicide bombers are some kind of enigma that come out of nowhere without some kind of social and economic force behind their terrorism.

I went right from Peres to see the new Bond film with Jeff and Storn. It might’ve been whiplash if I wasn’t in dire need of some kind of distraction at that point.

I was never a huge Bond fan, really.

Bond films are car porn. Bond films are violent explosions and saving the world and beautiful women with catchy names and sexy accents and don’t forget to put Bond in some nice suits.

This film managed to do that. Judi Densch carried this movie on her shoulders. Whatever they are paying her, they should double it. I think Daniel Craig is my favorite Bond.

James Bond isn’t a nice guy, not even really a decent guy. I dig that. I think Brosnan was too damned likeable. I want to root for Bond but I don’t want to walk away with an urge to grab a beer with the guy.

It was a fun movie. Thumbs up.

  1. See that is cause you are a nice guy so you want nothing to do with him. Me… I am the exact opposite… Not only would I go get a drink with that fucker I would try to take his gig… 😉

Loved that fucking movie… And that opening sequence (the title work) is the best I’ve seen yet. The whole blocks of colors thing was genius.

  3. Why do you say Dame Densch carried the film? (Don’t get me wrong, I love her in just about anything, I was just curious about your statement)

Exactly! Brosnan was so polished and charming (and the car and gadget porn so over the top) that it just got unreal. Craig is much more like Fleming intended Bond – a bit of a brute, and a guy who will do what he needs to do to get the job done.

Was I the only guy to wonder just how long he had to spend in hospital and recuperating before he’s able to go tumbling on tables with Vesper?

  5. This was the best Bond movie I’ve ever seen, and Craig is both the best actor to play Bond, as well as the best Bond period. Having just “read” (audible.com) Casino Royale, the movie was extremely faithful to the book and even improved on it.

  7. I remember the Senator from Missouri (I don’t recall his name) who talked at my graduation — the one where I got my Ph.D. The one where they stopped traffic on 6th Avenue for us — do you know what that means to a New Yorker? Wow.

But that senator. His speech went on. And on. And on. And everyone cheered wildly — not because we agreed, though we pretty much did. We cheered in a desperate attempt to make him stop talking, so we could get our diplomas, use the dang bathroom, and get out of the auditorium and eat.

For analysis on matters MidEastern, I’ve been looking at , and found this very useful to tell all the players apart. (osewalrus is, of course, hardly unbiased, and that is true of me as well.)
