Wow. We take so much for granted now. But back when this baby came out, the whole legend starts with a strongman in a makeshift rocket who grows up in an orphanage to become pretty much a jackass in tights.

The cover of AC #1 has always confused me. Why is Supes smashing that car? There’s no one in it, and he’s not using it to smash someone. Is it an evil car?
I think it just goes to show, Superman was a dick from day one.

1) Holy Cow! do I love Joe Shuster’s art! It’s so simplistic, so amateurish, yet so innocent and dynamic.
2) I love the original concept of Superman’s powers: none of this yellow sun/lighter gravity jazz; Kryptonians are physically more advanced than we are, but someday, Earthlings could also evolve to be like Kryptonians. It’s so brilliantly optimistic!

I really miss the early, New Deal-era Superman. Yes, it’s childish but it’s also really cool. “Dang, the Great Depression has thrown our society into chaos. But I’m going to bully the profiteers, the crooked politicians, the money-men, and the gangsters until they’re scared straight and stop pissing on the little guy. Because I’m a real man–no, make that, a super-man.”
How they go from that, to Grant Morrison’s “All-Star Superman” (which is excellent but a very, very different beast) is completely beyond me.
