The Single Best NIght of Gaming in Your Life

If someone had told me that my favorite game session would happen at a con I would have said they were nuts.

If someone had told me that my favorite game session would be P.T.A. I would have said that was quite possible.

If someone had told me that game session would be a P.T.A. session that was a British Masterpiece Theatre set in the Victorian era that addressed issues of class struggle and violence against women I would have scoffed.

But tonight it happened. and it happened due to a trick of fate.

Michael Miller accidentally put up an extra PTA session with my name on it. I’ll thank him for that tomorrow. I could have bailed on it but eff it, its PTA, right?

That game was a year ago? Seems like more time has went by. Hm.

Sweet Zombie Orcus that game was good. I linked that thread to another conversation and went back and re-read it. It is nice to have the thread as an artifact of what happened that night. Nice to have proof that a game can be that fucking great.

That one just ambushed me, out of the blue, didn’t see it coming. To further abuse my baseball metaphor for awesome gaming, other games have been solid triples and even the worst games lately are doubles but a bona fide home run…

I pass the real life Hare and Hound every day on my way to work and when I take the time to glance left and notice it I smile.

How about you? What is the best single night of gaming in your life?

  1. I’m honestly not sure if I could pick just one night as the “best” of the bunch. I’ve had some really great games over the years, but each of them was great for a different reason.

I had a couple of nights in my ongoing Vampire/Wraith LARP that just clicked. Everyone was in-character, involved in a variety of scenes and making good use of the social system. However, this is also the same group that drove me nuts as a Storyteller other nights.

One of the best convention demos I ever ran was an AFMBE game at GameFest Milwaukee. Every one was having a good time and their characters were getting eaten by zombies in the most horrific ways imaginable.

  4. It’d be one of the sessions of Born to be Kings, but I’d be hard pressed to pick which one. Though in a pinch, I’d say it was near the game’s midpoint, with the session titled Arise where Finndo (Rob) sacrificed a child of one of the other PCs, Cyrus, to the spirit of the mountain in order to undo the return of a dead King:

Finndo: “What use would you have for a child of our blood?”
Kolvir: “That is my business, mortal.”
Finndo: “Very well. There is a child of our blood who stands upon your peak.”
    Kolvir: “Yes.”
Finndo: “She is mine to dispense with.”
    Kolvir: “Is she.”
    Finndo: “She is.”
    Kolvir: “Fascinating.”
Finndo: “Take her and take her quickly.”

  7. Probably the session of Burning Kingdoms where I won two Battle!s against all odds—my dice were absolutely on fire (pun intended) that day. At the end of the session, I rolled 25 motherfucking successes on my Macro roll, taking out 2 of the 3 other factions. 25! Granted, I was rolling 18 gray dice, but still.

I mean, what happened in the fiction was absolutely incredible, too, but I’ll always remember how absolutely ridiculously well I rolled that day.

  10. That game was almost two years ago (Dreamation 2006), but I’ll gladly take whatever name-dropping I can get. BTW, I just listened to SoK #48 and thought the cut scene segment could have been stronger. If you can find the time, I’d love to expand upon that over Skype.

Best night of gaming EVAR? Impossible to say, as I have a lousy memory of my games. The Cosmic Zap WGP… game at GenCon 2007 was great, but the MLwM game at Dreamation 2005 was also really, really good. Wouldn’t you agree, Wolfgang?

  13. In recent memory, the best night of gaming was Poison’d at GenCon 07 with Vincent, Matt, Julia, and Rich. That session hit a whole new level of gaming awesome. It was transgressive, touching, powerful, and human. Plus, I made several new friends. All-around amazing.
