The real issue GTA IV raises.

Forget the issues of violence, sexism and what-not. Those are sidelines to the real issue behind GTA IV and I have sussed it out after watching Bret play it for a while.

Why isn’t real radio, NPR aside, as good as it is in GTA? Someone should give Rockstar games their own damned radio station and let them loose.

  1. Easy- the radio in GTA isn’t:

    a) owned by Clear Channel
    b) content controlled by advertising
    c) built on programming lineups created by people outside it’s target demographic

  5. An NPR Story specifically addressing the radio in the game.

    2:10 in length.

On a related note, they have some interesting bits on the game itself here and here and here as well.

A friend of mine at the University of Wisconsin–Madison is pursuing his doctorate in education and is using this game right now in a pretty interesting way. A recent study (well documented) showed that the population with the worst behavior was with children who played no video games at all. The study is documented in The Book Grand Theft Childhood, and they have a website. My friend is a neo-Lacanian too, pursuing a doctorate after a full career as a teacher, union rep, the whole nine yards–so he’s not just some pointy-headed theorist. He’s got some really neat stuff there.
