A glutened Friday

I got hit earlier this week; I think it was a usually GF 3 Musketeers bar.

Bah.

Reading: Still finishing up The Thief but also finishing the Starman Omnibus volume 1; I’m excited that they are collecting one of my favorite series of the 90’s in a big beautiful hard-cover graphic novels.

Wearing: White button down and black jeans.

Planning: Off to see the lady-friend on Saturday.

Writing: This week was a total bust.

And you?

Wearing: I’m working from home today, so I’m currently wearing sweat shorts and my Stranger Things T-shirt. (When is that game coming out, anyway?)

Planning: My 20-year high school reunion is tomorrow night. I’m hoping my wife will be out of the hospital and able to attend with me.

Writing: Lots of web stuff for work.

  8. Reading: Audible-“reading” Sundiver by Brin, the first of the Uplift books.

Wearing: Blue-plaid, short-sleeved, button-up, collared shirt (minimal acceptable work gear), blue khaki shorts, and my comfortable and bullet-proof KEEN boots designed for winter trekking through snow.

Planning: A trip to Adam Dray’s house in MD for AdamCon. I leave right after work.

Writing: Doing final layout on Misspent Youth. I know, it’s not writing. Fuck you for judging me.

MD for Adamcon? Man, you are a gaming machine. Misspent Youth there?

You caught me; I was totally judging you.

Why the heavy boots in the summer-time, Mr. Sweat-in-Front-of-the-Air-Conditioner-with-no-Shirt-On Man.

      • Re: summer footwear

Yes, Misspent Youth will be there, but I won’t be running it. The totally-awesome Dan Levine will be running it and I’ll be playing it.

As for why the boots: my tootsies are gentle flowers that bruise, inflame, and ache very easily. I need highly-specialized shoes in the $100 range so that I’m not in constant pain. Unfortunately the shoe-shoes fall apart under my rugged manly use of them. The boots are the only things sturdy enough to last.

    Reading: Clockers by Richard Price.

  22. Hey Judd, I have a question because recently started trying to go gluten free (not coeliac, but seems pretty squarely pegged as some kind of intolerance): Is it the case that processed food stuffs can be absolutely fine on some pass-throughs and other times hit you? Is it common? I’ve been pulling my hair out with self-diagnosis because the blimmin goal posts keep moving.

and in the spirit of the post:

Reading: Just finished Day of the Locust by Nathanael West. Damn.
Wearing: Arraio do Cabo Dive Town T-shirt
Planning: Trip to La Dolce Vita barn party at Alpaca Farm!
Writing: Draft ‘rent my flat so I don’t go bankrupt’ emails…

    Alex (F, from the indieweb)

    • Hey Alex,

I am not sure I understand the question.

Some big companies change their ingredients based on what is cheap, so if you are not really careful, a candy bar that was fine for months, will suddenly have a glutenous filler of some kind.

I believe I got hit by a 3 Musketeers bar the other day because after a while of being fine with them.

Hope that answer helps and if not, ask more. I am happy to help.

      • That does help, thanks. In my case it’s not always about active ingredients – I thought I was fine with porridge oats (ingredients: oats) for a while but now they seem to be giving me a lot of grief. But it may be a change in processing, introducing trace gluten. So same deal.

        Ever vigilance!
