Man, yoga kicked my ass this morning. I’m not sure why but this class was the hardest one yet. I’ll go again on Monday.
Reading: I put down the viking historical fantasy novel, The Whale Road when I realized that I just didn’t give a fuck about the last thirty pages at all. Now I’m finishing up The Thief and Money Shot while flirting with the first ten pages of Childhood’s End.
Planning: Saturday night fights, Sunday picnic with the Conspiracy of Shadows Pirates who could make it and sleeping on my new futon with Janaki (but not with Zorro).
Wearing: My new Dickies jeans and black shirt but I forgot my damned belt.
Writing: I wrote about the second session of Daggers and Deviltry and tinkered with other things.
And you?
Reading: Most of my books are packed for the move and I was without internet for a couple of days…so I’m just trying to catch up on e-mail/blogs.
Planning: Where stuff goes in the new place.
Wearing: Cargo shorts & Nox Arcana t-shirt
Writing: Reviews and a pitch for a new book
Move
Why the move?
Moves are so stressful. Be well.
Re: Move
There were a couple of reasons. The top two being:
Bad neighbors, lots of them and only getting worse.
We found a townhouse close to‘s office with all the cool stuff we wanted (central air, etc).

Writing: A list of graphic novels for a coworker who’d like to know some graphic novels to “start with” as he’s not read any in the past.
Wow. Boring week.
HULK SMASH LIST!
Planet Hulk was so much fun. It makes me wish that World War Hulk was so much better than it was.
Ah well.
That graphic novels list sounds like a hoot!
Re: HULK SMASH LIST!
Ever since the ILL person here told me we made Worldcat publicly searchable and since Circ assured me that hold fees were waived for staff *even on ILLs* I have been going *nuts* on the graphic novels section of every library in America. Some things have come out of order, though, and World War Hulk was one of them. I didn’t think it was that great, though there were a couple of individual scenes I liked. Planet Hulk has been fun so far, I’m about halfway through.
I posted my graphic novels list to my blog. I dunno, it seems like there’s more to share… but since he’s not read graphic novels before, I can’t hand him everything.

I like the new story hour, but was wondering if your other game (with your Raven Queen-devoted Paladin) is still kicking around?
It is still kickin’ but we’ve had two missed weeks in a row and we’re all on the edge of second level.
Its just on a low ebb of momentum is all.
Sweet! Good to hear.

I’m glad you are enjoying Daggers & Deviltry.
Thanks for reading.

Reading: Isaac Asimov’s Foundation, which I haven’t read since junior high and barely remembered. I’m absolutely loving it and tearing through it. I’m also skimming Burning Empires, which I finally got. Love. It. Want. To. Play. It.
Planning: Driving my daughter from Olathe, KS to DeKalb, IL so she can attend a week-long science summer camp for advanced students. I’m not looking forward to the drive, but I’m kind of looking forward to spending a night in a hotel on the road.
Wearing: Tan trousers, shortsleeve blue plaid shirt, red Chuck Taylors.
Writing: Not a lot, except for work stuff, although I have some ideas bouncing around in my head.
Viewing: Bright Young Things should be arriving from Netflix today, although I probably won’t watch it until I get back from DeKalb.

I consider all yoga to be difficult, especially since there’s always room to challenge yourself more. Admittedly, when I last took a class it was late in the evening and during the relaxation part at the end I occasionally fell asleep.
I think Pirates is an excellent idea for Conspiracy of Shadows. Might have to give that a try.
Reading: Bar exam materials. Dread: The First Book of Pandemonium
Planning: The TN Bar exam. To review Dread. Some sort of bi-monthly RPG with an eye towards games that a friend’s wife might enjoy.

Writing: TN Bar exam answers. Helpful posts here and there when I can.
Pantsless Pirates

Planning: This weekend will be sacrificed on the altar of getting the last of the MAID RPG materials together, then cranking out the last of the Tenra Bansho organization. And season 2.5 BSG.

Other: Just scheduled three days off next week. Planning a day to the beach, and two days of fucking relaxing.

Vacation and Japanese stuff
Those days off sound sweet.
What’s Haruhi Suzumiya about?
Master Assassin sounds fucking hot.
Re: Vacation and Japanese stuff
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is awesome, I’m so waiting for the next season, though I wouldn’t want to watch it in order…
It’s about a girl who is basically the keeper of the universe, in a solipsist manner. The universe is here for her.
She creates the SOS Brigade in school, with Kon, the normal boy, and the rest of the members are a virtual program, an ESPer, and a time traveling alien.
Amusingly enough, the SOS Brigade’s mandate is to find the above three type of entities…
It’s wacky, it’s a lot of fun, and I really love the ending song. Ooooh, turns out the version in the anime is the short one, here‘s a long one. This is the short one, which is pure concentrated awesome.
And of course, how can you not fall in love with Haruhi’s hair?
Re: Vacation and Japanese stuff
Er, yeah. Sorry, my blood rejects otaku-creepy at times, and loves it at other times. For me, the dance sequence is something to fast forward through.
And of course, you can’t go to an anime convention and swing a cat without hitting a group of 14-year-olds doing a well-rehearsed Haruhi Cheer Dance. That’s kinda why it’s on the otaku hit list.
I dig the sollopsistic stuff, characters and story flow though.
Re: Vacation and Japanese stuff
Erm, just now, searching for the dance in order to show Judd I’ve seen the real life rendering for the first time…
Aside from one video with a cute/hot girl, yeah, the kind of stuff I dislike.

Re: Vacation and Japanese stuff
Yeah, gonna head to the beach for at least one day, then basically do nothing but sleep, BSG, pushups and yoga for the other days. And put some GC stuff together in those gaps (I’m trying to put together a Ghost Killers Ashcan, I guess that’s no longer a secret now 🙂 )
Haruhi Suzumiya is a conundrum: It has the full support of the otaku community, which normally means that it’s shit, but it’s actually kinda interesting.
The jist is that this girl in high school says “I’m not interested in normal people, I only want to talk to aliens, espers, time travellers and the like”. The main character is a boy who inadvertantly befriends her. She forms a club which includes an alien, an esper and a time traveller. However, she doesn’t know this: They all want to keep it a secret (the guy does, though, because they all confide in him). The thing is, this is a “normal world”(ish) anime, and the backstory is that at some point in the last 3 years, the aliens, the time travellers and ESPers all either came into being, or were affected by some event. And it could very well be that this girl is creating the very universe around her in some sort of weird Maya-ish dream. It’s like funny, and surreal.
Thing is, the anime had a specific broadcast order: There’s 13 or so eps, but in the original broadcast they were shown out-of-order, which actually heightens the interest in teh story: It’s not totally confusing or anything, they did it to be creative, and did it in a way that is really climactic. The DVD order, which is the “episode chronological order” is actually kind of a let-down.
Basically, if you have a friend with the set, check out the wikipedia link, and watch the eps in the order in the “B” column:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_The_Melancholy_of_Haruhi_Suzumiya_episodes
Overall, an interesting concept, and an overall cheery, and a little surreal, ride. Not too otaku-icky, but also not the best anime out there (like, it doesn’t compare to 12 Kingdoms or Fruits Basket, frex).
Master Assassin is hot. I got the books after I watched the DVDs like 4 times each. Seriously some of the best period dramas I’ve seen, and I’ve seen like almost all the Zatoichis, etc.
(full set, 8 hours/16 eps for $22 http://www.amazon.com/Baian-Assassin-Vol-1-4/dp/B000MTFFHW , they’re also on Netflix where I saw them originally)
Basically, this is one of Ken Watanabe’s first roles, as a bulky accupunturist/doctor during the day, and at night an assassin. Every episode is like liquid gold poured into your eyeballs. The “killing action” is like 30 seconds, but the rest of the show is all character drama and story set-up. I totally recommend the DVDs, then the novels (as the books have more short stories that didn’t get turned into episodes). The short stories totally remind me of the pulps: A Japanese Conan, who is an earnest doctor and an honor-bound assassin.

Reading: Vellum: The Book of All Hours by Hal Duncan. It’s about…um…angels and gods and demons. It’s a fantasy novel with a wholly non-linear plot. If you squint, it’s sort of like a cross between Prophecy (movie) and American Gods. So far.
Planning: Pick up dad at the airport tomorrow. Work Saturday and Sunday nights. Grassroots. Understaffed. New doc. Should suh-huck.
Wearing: Dust.
I read Vellum. I liked the beginning parts, but after a while, I got kind of tired of it. I’m not sure if I want to read the sequels.
Yeah, now I’m starting to see what you mean. The relentless, pretentious, abstract mythology and woefully non-linear plot are exhausting to try and read. At the beginning, I thought, “wow, what a cool way to start a book.” Now that I’m in the middle, I just sort of wish he’d write like a normal person.
