I wish it had more competition. Iron Man was touted so highly and really, it was well acted, fun and competent.
This was more than that. It had elements of Michael Mann’s Heat all over it, from the opening sequence right on through the way noise and a lack thereof was used to ratchet up the drama.
I want to start with my only annoyance first. Bale’s Batman growl/talk is really fucking annoying. At times he just went over the line with it; it was an area I had hoped would be improved from the last film. Other than that, Bale was picture perfect.
Heath Ledger’s Joker was so menacing that me and Janaki were holding on to one another for support every time he hit the screen. The Joker exhausted me in a good way. From that opening sequence with the pencil right on through to the end, the Joker was absolutely perfect. Jack who?
The rise and fall of Harvey Dent was glorious to behold and their special effect choices with his face were brilliant.
It was long and dense but it all worked and fit together. I want to see it again.
And I want the next movie to be about Two-Face’s therapy in Arkham when Batman catches him in the opening action sequence of the film with an all-out Penguin-Riddler-Clayface (seriously, none of those guys deserve their own movie) gang war in the streets of Gotham as the Joker’s new class of criminal is born in the midst of Catwoman seducing Batman as a woman who accepts the Bat for who he is and Selina Kyle seducing Bruce Wayne for his money.
I want a movie about being a freak and what happens when the freaks hit Gotham and take over where the old mobs used to be.

For me? I’d love to see it as a horror film with Man-Bat as the monster. Set it up ala David Cronenberg’s The Fly.

I thought Dent/Two-Face was dead at the end of The Dark Knight, wasn’t he? Not that people don’t return from the dead all the time in comics, but I got a pretty strong impression that he was out of the picture.

I feel like the only villains that make sense for the next one are riddler/catwoman. A really cerebral take on riddler would be awesome. Could be a great counterpoint to joker
You can’t do clayface, he’s too comicbooky. He’s awesome, but he just isn’t believable and this series is all about coming from the real world.

I’m also in the Riddler next camp. It’s the only thing that makes sense, given the rather psychological bent of the series thus far. The Penguin, Poison Ivy, Clayface? They’re cartoons. Catwoman’s a notch better but her interest is all in the not-quite-fucking-Batman side of things (or actually fucking Batman, depending on the writers and continuity, I suppose), but that’s so far from the psychology of the series so far (this Batman is practically sexless, with even his nominal love interest being a distant former childhood friend with whom he barely manages to share a single kiss).
Of all his villains, the only remaining one I can see working is some really heavy take on the Riddler. I’d go for a slew of monsterous villains, like killer croc, clay-face, man-bat, etc. But they can be fodder. Introducing the riddler or the penquin might be fun, but I’d really like to see the return of Ra’s. After all, a metaphorical Lazerus pit would be neat.
