So, M. Night is going to be directing the live-action version. After the cartoon finale, I am not at all sure that I want a live-action version. This version was absolutely pitch perfect. I don’t need any other.
Also, if they cast white kids in all of the major roles I am going to explode with nerdrage.
I am sorry to say that, uh, there’s a white kid.
But he’s sorta cute.
All
I’m not saying, “NO WHITE KIDS!” I just don’t want every major cast member to be lilly white.
And honestly, I think my problem is that I’m happy and content with the cartoon as is.
I am perfectly willing to accept being wrong once a great movie version comes out and/or realizing that I am being entirely unfair here.
Re: All
I haven’t seen the last like six eps, but I’m so onboard with you about not feeling like I need a movie.
Also, I’m not sure Shyamalan was really, uh, a good choice. I’d have picked Cuarón if I could.

There’s been a lot of talk in my circles recently about this thing in sci-fi/fantasy where asian culture shows up, but no asian people. You know, because we’re like the wrapper around the candy that is our culture- our essential role is to deliver Teh Wisdoms and then be thrown away.
Given that we just had a major release with a big name actor in blackface, I don’t expect anything good from Hollywood this time around either.

Do you mean the film with Robert Downey Jr. as a guy who had surgery in order to play a black man?
Wasn’t that flat-out mocking blackface?
Re: Blackface
Haven’t seen the movie, but, based on the print ads everywhere, would seem to be failing at making the mocking clear.
Re: Blackface
I thought the trailer pretty clearly mocked him and the procedure.
Re: Blackface
Yay? I’ll wait until Halloween to see how I feel about that.

Re: Blackface
Huh. I totally saw that and went “dude, they’re mocking Method. Hilarious!” The Blackface bit didn’t click with me.

Re: Blackface
Someone much more informed than me about the movie has an excellent critique.
It makes me think of the recent “Obama/Michelle as Terrorists” New Yorker cover- it’s supposed to be edgy but simply fails. Or you know, David Chapelle’s issue of why he quit his show- the irony was instead being read at face value and the point missed completely.

It looks like a subversion of the trope, yes. I think that movie actually looks funny – well, for a BEn Stiller movie, that is…

On the season 2 boxed set, there is an interview between the creators and M. Night. I had a lot of doubts at first, but after seeing how they interacted, I’m pretty positive he can do the series justice.
And yes, it was perfect. Avatar is pretty much exactly how I want all of my roleplaying to be. All of it. Awesome

When the DVDs come out, we need to snag one of the rooms with a projection TV and surround sound — the Music Libe has one, I think — and get a group together there to watch Sozin’s Comet there.
I’m right there with you: the show was damn-near perfect, and I’m skeptical that the live-action movie will live up to it.
Dude, I would take a weekend to visit Ithaca to get in on that.
I endorse Mike and Kerri coming to Ithaca!!!

The movies are doomed. If they are perfect in every way, they will succeed only in being redundant. We already have the best possible Avatar. Gah. I want to just close my eyes until they go away.
That sums up my feelings pretty much perfectly.

Could be good, though Night hasn’t had a great track record lately.
I am quite hoping that there’s more Avatar-like stuff in the tv realm.
