Reading A Game of Thrones. I’m liking it despite the place names. Every major location seems to be named by looking at a map of the land and deciding what to call things rather than how people living on the land would naturally name them. For instance, there’s an isthmus that is over 350 miles wide at its narrowest point. That’s wider than Pennsylvania and New Jersey. This area is called The Neck. Imagine the first settlers to Florida arriving and deciding that they would call that area “The Penis”. I’m surprised that there isn’t a mountain range called The Spine of the World running up the center of the continent.
Anyway, besides that — and it is really a minor point — I’m enjoying the book.
Planning on cleaning the house this morning, shopping, and laundry in preparation for my sister-in-law’s family to visit this weekend. Unfortunately, I’m working all day Sunday at the game store.
