1st Quest – Flattered

Thanks to everyone who signed up for the two 1st Quest games that I am running at this coming Dreamation. Vinny e-mailed me this morning and let me know that we were way over-booked and asked if I could squeeze more folks in and I just couldn’t. I’d rather run a fun game with less people than water it down and have a potentially lame game because its all spread too thin.

I wish 1st Quest was a game like Shock: and we could deal with the overflow like we did with last year’s game of four tables all playing different takes on the same shock. That was fantastic.

So, thanks for your enthusiasm, folks. I am truly flattered and hope that those who didn’t get in to the games find fun tables in that time slot and those who did, I’ll see you at the end of this week.

I’m giddy with excitement.

  1. I mean that with the highest respect and admiration, btw. 1st Quest sounds like it’s going to be a lot of fun. I expect to hear many fun anecdotes from your tables after the convention. ^_^

  3. I’m hoping I got into one of them (I haven’t heard back yet, for some reason). 🙂

And yah, I anticipated some of the rush; I requested both of your slots of 1st Quest, but put in a note that said “if I get into the first slot of this, DON’T put me in the second!”

    More folks need a shot.

  7. Yeah, going for quality over quantity is a very good call. I’ve been in overbooked games before, and they often kill an otherwise good session. If you cut scenes quickly and snap from person to person it can work okay, but not all games do that well.

Not sure if I made it into one of your 1st Quest games or not, but I’m thrilled for your sake that it’s so popular!

I am giddy with excitement as well – for Dreamation in general and for the opening game on Thursday. I’m running carry, which is one of my favorite games, and I already know and love at least three of the players in it. It’s going to rock! And I *really* need to sleep, but I keep thinking about and prepping game stuff!

  11. Today I was talking at Joshua, trying to figure out what you’re doing so right and how I can cynically imitate it.

Since I didn’t hear there was a problem, I believe I got in to one of these.

  15. I think Vinny has been much better about honoring small head-count sessions this year, but he expressed his frustration to me – from his POV every table should have 9 people at it, all the time. Good on you for sticking to your guns – I did the same.

  19. Vinnie’s a great guy, but there’s an inherent contradiction in what he wants. Part of what makes a lot of the indie games so awesome, that attracts people to sign up, is the small number of players. Take that away and the games aren’t as good.

It’s true with some tradtional games as well. Oscar Rios holds firm with a maximum of 6 players, despite Vinnie’s best efforts, and I am quite greatful to Oscar for this, even if it should mean I don’t get into one of his CoC games. (And if you ever have a chance to play “Setting Sun, Rising Tide” with him gming, grab it.)

Warlock Corner was my absolute first choice for the entire convention. I love the possibilities you opened up with the system hack. I think thebest way to get more sessions of 1st Quest is to train more of us to run it, specifically, how to run it at conventions, which isn’t the same as running it at home.
