Dr. Doom makes me happy.

I was reading Daredevil, almost excited because it seemed like my prophecy would come true and Matt Murdock would be the Kingpin of Hell’s Kitchen, leading a ninja clan to keep the peace. Oh yes, he has become his own greatest enemy but also awesome.

So, the Hand offers him leadership.

Oh yeah.

He turns them down.

Oh well.

I read through the latest Thor, which was some kind of anniversary issue. And its all ho-hum kinda boring. Odin’s father returns, Loki’s shenanigans cause Thor to kill his own grandfather, so Thor is banished from Asgard.

Here’s where it almost get’s interesting. Asgard is plopped down in the American midwest right now. Loki (in the body of a woman now…why?) is talking to some Asgardian shmoe in a bar, saying that he knows a place where they could relocate Asgard, a mountainous place with lots of good hunting…LATVERIA!

BAM!

It almost made me want to keep reading that series. Almost.

I had to buy Captain Britain and the MI13 when the issue started off with Dr. Doom and Dracula having a discussion on the moon near the lunar lander. The rest of the issue was shite (except for when some British lads in a pub gave Blade shit for being too tragically hip to just sit in the pub and enjoy himself) but that bit was fun. I’ll likely buy a few more issues just to see some four-color Marvel Dracula madness.

EDIT:

I forgot to add that Doom took Dracula to task for being a racist prick about Muslims. It was kinda cool, actually.

    • Doom!

If it is written by anyone decent (and even if not, I will, just with a warning label) I sure will.

The latest arc in the Fantastic Four might be worth checking out. The next few issues are about Doom’s Master coming to town in order to eff shit up and the last arc, The Death of the Invisible Woman, has Doom as kind of an accessory/time bomb but is well worth reading.

      • It’s adorable that you say “eff” when you could say “fuck” just as easily. I think SoK and being in libraries has given you brain damage.

        From the Encyclopedia Britannica Online:

in Norse mythology, a cunning trickster who had the ability to change his shape and sex.

He also shapeshifted into a mare and fucked a horse to create Sleipnir.

      • Rock out with your Loki out

I don’t think anyone here is spoiler-sensitive to Thor comics right now, so rock out with your Marvel comics knowledge out and inform us if you care to.

      • Re: Rock out with your Loki out

When all of the Asgardians were reborn into mortal bodies after Ragnarok, Loki took control of the body of Sif, Thor’s lover. That way, when Thor reawakened all of the Asgardians across the globe all at once, she did not return and Thor thinks she’s gone for good.

The Asgardians don’t seem to realize s/he’s up to something because they’re terminally stupid when it comes to Loki.

Also: rebooting the numbering scheme in the middle of the run like that is bullshit.

  9. Dr Doom has long been an inspiration for me to create great RPG villains, mostly because Doom honestly believes that his actions are for the greater good. He is, philosophically speaking, a utilitarian who is willing to live by his beliefs, and not a half-arsed one who wants to maximise happiness as long as it doesn’t hurt anyone. (Although, one could also argue that Doom is an Übermensch.)

And that’s the tension between Doom and the super-heroes. One side is willing to sacrifice others for the greater good, the other is willing only to sacrifice themselves.

I have the Doom 2099 series and adored it all the way through. His drive to rescue his country, and then the world through the conquest of America, makes him a character with depth.
