Reading: Finishing up Best Served Cold and Abercrombie has a great mix of telegraphed punches and twists that the pages are flying by. Its a fun read but man, the protagonists are some flawed motherfuckers. Holy shit. I’ll write more about it in a review later.
Planning: Get my portfolio in the mail tomorrow and pack tonight for New York City.
Writing: Mostly doing schoolwork but I’ve been jotting down lots of notes for an AW hack (isn’t everyone?) and have started the next chapter in the Troll Matron story, which is surprising me in nice ways.

Reading: Man’s Search for Meaning. Finished Part I, reminded me how nice it is to sit around and have first world problems. Onto the theory.
Planning: Trying to figure out how to get what I want from gaming (shared revelatory moments) while giving other people what they want too (flexible scheduling).
Writing: Some private therapeutic stuff about growing up.
Reading: Re-reading some Idries Shah books on Sufism.
Planning: Folks coming in from out of town. Hopefully dim sum and also boardgames!
Writing: Finishing up pregen characters for a BW scenario. Working on a twosie game, “Neptune’s Jewels” – two adolescents go on a quest, and maybe fall in love. Thinking about writing posts on a) knife fighting! b) roleplaying as a story medium for non-gamers.
I’m halfway through “The Heroes” by Abercrombie and bought “Best Served Cold” the other day. I love “The Heroes” — I’m a huge fan of gritty fantasy with flawed and more realistic characters. I love that the whole book is pretty much about a Stonehenge-like hill.
I found the characters more flawed than even those in The Black Company books (except for Shed) but less so than those in A Song of Fire and Ice. Of course, there’s a lot of time to develop characters over the course of 3,500 pages vs 600, but hey.
Have a good time in NYC! I can’t wait to read the next Troll Matron bit.
I’m trying to figure out why AW has yet to grab me. I’ll have to give it a shot when I’m back into roleplaying. I’m getting such a gigantic backlog of “must play” games, it’s maddening.
R: Nada. Too busy working right now.
P: Tinkering with Inform 7 on my second (old, just dug out of the closet) computer until I get a wifi card installed and therefore Google Docs access.
W: Hopefully Pulp Baby once I get that computer online. Until then a very small (about six rooms) interactive fiction piece. I’m trying to frame it as a story being told to the player, where the unreliable narrator is setting up an exciting story from his own past, but asking the player what she’d have done in his stead. I hope it works out.
Reading: I’m putting volume five of The Best Science Fiction and Fantasy of the Year on hold for now. It had an Abercrombie story which, predictably, I did not care for. Purely a matter of taste. I finished The Cruel Empire of Tsan Chan, despite a total lack of editing, and The Dead White World, for Call and Trail of Cthulhu respectively, and I’m in the middle of The Big Hoodoo for Trail of Cthulhu. The Big Hoodoo is an utter romp. These three are things I’m reading on Josh’s Nook, and I’m trying to figure out if it’s making my arms ache or if that was from lugging a heavy plastic container one handed (switching off hands every half block or so). And, of course, Josh does want his Nook back.
Planning: Heading to the storage units to bring back a lamp and such boxes as might have useful paperwork in the matter of my parents’ estates.
Writing: Email to lawyers, pbem moves, my zine for Alarums & Excursions, and lists of what is in the storage unit.
