What I’d say to my friend whose fictional pet I don’t want to kill, “How about you describe the pet taking part in combat as part of your attacks and damage without statting them as a separate character and we’ll agree that the pet does not get killed because that would remind us all of pets we have lost and cause a fun game to turn into a bad evening.”
