Sleepy Friday

Reading: I’ve got a few books of short stories by my bed and I read a short story before I go to sleep most nights. The Guild of Xenolinguists and another that slips my mind but some Kelly Link is in the mail and this excites me. The audiobook of Beautiful Monsters has really grabbed me during long trips to Albany and back

Planning: Off to see the lady-friend but before that, some solo gaming tonight.

Wearing: Dickies pants and a button down today.

Writing: One comic book proposal for a company that doesn’t take unsolicited proposals and some art direction for a dingus I wrote last week.

And you?

  1. Hey, my best friend works in the comic book industry down in LA (he does reviews and some web work for a small comic business… as well as having published a short piece and getting another solicited for a Dark Horse collection)! Lemme know if you want me to hit him up and see what goes into shopping a proposal around…

  5. Info on Comics

I would love it if you hit him up for that info.

I’m imagining the advice is, “Don’t send unsolicited queries,” but please do let me know what he says.

    Thanks!

  7. reading: Nuffing.

planning: Warhammer with Andy. Dinner with grandparents on Sunday. Maybe trying to get some game stuff together.

  11. Reading: Forgotten Realms 4E, The Universe of Babylon 5 (Traveller). Taking a break from the Dresden Files series when, on book 5, I exclaimed “These books sure are starting to blend together.” They’re great, but the same formula and style is probably not best appreciated in one giant clump.

    Planning: LSAT teaching, 4E Planescape

Wearing: A giant, happy smiley face T-Shirt!

Writing: Finishing reviews of Immortal Sinners (Vampire) and Curriculum of Conspiracy (Monsters).

Here’s hoping that comic book proposal works out, Judd. I’d love to read a comic written by you!

      • Re: 4e Planescape

I’ve been running it for months, actually, but I’m always planning something new.

Our setup was that there was a grand adventuring group that traveled the Planes and did everything they could ever want to do. They destroyed artifacts, killed gods, and left a slew of friends and enemies behind. Then they started having children, so they scoped out an ideal Prime Material World and retired.

Their children, through various epic events, are now in Sigil where they’re establishing themselves while also chasing after the legacy of their parents. It has been a beautiful combination of interesting (if, often, harsh) roleplay and plenty of dungeon opportunities.

4E sings when it comes to fun combat. I really dig how easy it is to prep, too.

  15. Reading: just finishing Inkdeath, and then I’ll read Princep’s Fury.

Planning: Weekend around the house, which will probably include some outside home maintenance, but maybe we’ll lazy out.

Wearing: nothing special. Blue shirt, black pants.

Writing: Sorta plotting out / writing scenes from a superhero novel called “mysterious stranger” but its feeling very derivative so its probably more an excercise than anything else.

  19. Good luck with the proposal. We need more good writers in comics.

Reading: About to start Dresden Files book two. I was expecting the first one to be flat, and it wasn’t. A pleasant surprise.

Planning: D&D4 on Sunday. Possible trip to the zoo with the family tomorrow.

Wearing: Grey stripe shirt and blue pants

Writing: Maybe, MAYBE, a game chef game. Who woulda thunk it?

      • Re: Skill Challenges

        Some ideas I’m using:

        1) Multi-NPC Negotiation

Party ends up talking to a bunch of different NPCs, with multiple options – let the players interact and pull the appropriate skill that naturally comes up in play. Gives me a chance to show off a bunch of NPCs, build some relationships, and give a lot of skill options.

        2) Each roll has longer term effects

Small benefits/challenges out of each roll- so that even if a group loses a skill challenge, they might walk out with something good, or if they win, they might still have problems.

(“We didn’t find out where their base is- but we did find out that they’re using Arkhosian magic, and got a nifty sword!”/”We did get the info we wanted, but I think the entire Miner’s Guild will be charging us double from now on…”)

        3) Each Skill Challenge leads to later Challenges/Quests

Looking at it as losing a skill challenge already loads up a later challenge or quest (perhaps a few sessions later), but as a great way to make winning or losing more an exercise in players shaping the setting.

(of course, as a Burning Wheel vet, I’m sure you’re already thinking about how to apply the things you’ve learned to 4E.)

      • Re: Skill Challenges

Rock on. I want to rock the old gaming chestnut, the prophetic dream.

We start a session at first or second level with a prophetic dream sent by the gods about the big threat the PC’s will likely face at 10th level. The General of the Ghoul Army, the High Priest of the Demon-God of the Gnolls, tearing apart their families and all that they care about.

If they succeed, they wake up in time to warn the town that badness is coming. If they fail, the wake up to several baddies knocking down their door with them in a bad position.

      • Re: Skill Challenges

Neat. Maybe you might want to play with Quests based on that – ranging from obvious (“You were chosen to wield the Sword of Fire – Major Quest: Get Sword of Fire”) to the HeroQuest-y Dream Weird (“You healed 3 others during the dream, so that is part of the quest… Major Quest: Save 3 from the edge of death to fulfill your role as the Resurrector”).

      • Re: Skill Challenges

I am hoping that it will be a concrete way to let them know where I’d like the game to go without trying to be telepathic.

Quests are another piece that fascinate me, yeah.

  33. Re: 4e Planescape
