And when I woke up it was Friday

Came home from work, took a nap and woke up in the middle of the night. In other news, my shiny new Blackberry is not working. I am not amused. I cannot get it out of its locked state, buttons do not work. Suck.

Reading: I was going to wait for Mieville’s new book; I work at a freaking library. I can wait. But when I went to Borders to pick up a slew of the Courtney Crumrin trade paperbacks they were all out and there was The City & the City, all shiny and new. I had a half hour before I had to be at Pete’s place for some burning up for our Blossoms are Falling game coming up, so I sat down and read.

I bought it and now Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell will have to wait for a while. Also, I am going to finish up Mortal Coil in the next 24 hours, as the first Blossoms has to wait due to an absent player.

Planning: Gaming on Friday night and no other plans this weekend, which is really nice. I am looking forward to that.

Wearing: It is nearly three in the morning, so its stripy boxers for me.

Writing: EDIT – I forgot to write this one in. Should finish a Shock:-inspired short story this weekend. I have been putting off the last third because it has intimidated me and I’ve only been writing drips and drabs here and there.

    • I think his Bas Lag novels are considered among the New Weird movement but it isn’t an easy thing to define.

      The City & the City is a departure for him; it is nice to see him taking on crime novel stylings and keeping his prose nice and simple.

Then I was puttering around in the University book store, and when I walked up to the checkout counter, it was just sitting there, taunting me. I could not resist its charms.

    Reading: Fool, Christopher Moore’s new romp (very silly and fun); The Steel Remains (the second I’m done with Fool!); How To Read a French Fry (nonfiction cooking/foodie/food science book, super-interesting).

    Just recently finished Amberville. Totally worthy. Very weird.

    Planning: Upcoming Blossoms game as well! But this time I get to play. It will, in fact, be the first time I’ve ever *played* Burning Wheel (having run it for the past 4 years). Totally stoked. Looking forward to helping the GM, too — it’ll be his first major GMing experience.

  41. Reading: I should be reading a Carol Berg novel, but it just isn’t grabbing me. I’ve been reading various manga and Call of Cthulhu adventures. I’ve decided I’m not going to reread two manga series: Tenshi Ja Nai, which was fun enough, but the end was a little annoying, and Cantarella, which I stopped collecting after volume 9. I’m a bit annoyed at the first two scenarios in the first issue of Worlds of Cthulhu. Both have decent concepts, but one kind of relies on “PCs will investigate everything to death, even if the connections are kind of tenuous”, and the other has decided exactly what the PCs will do so that the story can go exactly as the author wants it. I’m not talking stuff like “Make the big ritual happen whenever the PCs have all the clues and show up”, but “So, the PCs are going to chase this guy, obviously, and you, the GM, should kill him off during the fight.” Whoa. The PCs might, y’know, try talking. Scenarios in later issues are much improved, and I’m hoping ones later in this issue are, as well.

    Planning: Sleep. Meeting and finishing the adventure I based on one of the Kindacichi manga mysteries. Going to a house concert next week at ‘s to see .

    Wearing: Gen Con t-shirt, jeans, socks.

    Writing: Prep notes for gaming, maybe some blogging or zine writing.
