Old School Essentials: d6 Thief Skills, The Mage and the Acolyte

The d6 Thief Skills houserules, the Mage and the Acolyte from Carcass Crawler #1 fascinate me. There is a game there, somewhere.

I am reminded of a quote from the Baker Family from when someone in the family business wakes up and says, “I have an idea for a game.” They reply, “I am so sorry.”

I’m looking at the above classes, Diegetic Advancement and this thing about a wizard’s apprentice and I’m pondering. Is this my old codeword for what happens when one’s D&D houserules get together and become a game? Is this…whispersProject Ampersand? These death houserules need a tweak but not much.

I’m thinking about something I read about how having the Thief/Rogue class means other classes don’t feel like they have access to ambushes and stealthy and shadows. Maybe if that is true, having a Wizard/Sorcerer/Magic-user class means other classes feel they can’t access the energies of other worlds or the mysteries of arcana. Clerics, relationships with Greater Powers. Fighters, glory in battle. Etc.
